Chapter 4

“LEE,” Dirk said from behind him as he was working to finalize more details for the dinner. There were only two weeks left to plan, and the pressure was beginning to mount. “Cap wants to see you.” Lee turned from his list and saw the serious look on Dirk’s face. There was no way that could be good, and he began running things through his mind to see where he might have messed up. Not being able to remember anything, he stood up and walked to the office.

“Close the door,” Captain Morris said, and Lee complied before taking the seat the captain indicated. “There are people on the borough council all up in arms over this dinner, and it will be discussed at tonight’s council meeting. I’d like you to be there to answer questions. We aren’t doing anything wrong, and there really isn’t anything the council can do to stop us. We’re breaking no laws or ordinances. But according to the council member who called me, some of the members are receiving complaints from a few constituents. This will probably be nothing more than lip service, but we need to be there to defend what we’re doing.”

Lee’s head swam. “It’s only two weeks before the dinner, and I have a ton of things to get done yet. We don’t have time for this.”

“I know, but we have to do it if we want the council behind us—and we do. They’re the ones who approve our operating budget, and we’re trying to avoid being consolidated out of existence, so we need to play nice.” Captain Morris looked as thrilled about the prospect as Lee felt, but Lee nodded his assent and left the office. Regardless of the meeting, he had plenty to do. Sitting back at the table, he tried to work. His phone rang, and he answered it absently.

“Lee,” a familiar voice said, “this is Peter Christopoulos. I wanted to let you know that I have the plates, utensils, and napkins you needed. I ordered enough for 1500, and you can return unopened packages. I also arranged for the rental of 1500 glasses.” Lee heard papers rustling in the background. “The tablecloths were a little more difficult, but I got those too.”

“You’re a godsend,” Lee said.

“It’s no problem. I even got my cheap boss to kick in a donation, so I applied that to the bill already,” Peter said. “I’ll be there with Billy and Darryl, and I’m looking forward to seeing you again.” Lee could almost hear an excited smile. “Everything will be delivered to the expo center by truck the morning of the dinner, so you won’t have to store it and then haul it over again.”

Lee could hardly believe it. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Call me if there are any issues.”

“I will,” Lee said excitedly before disconnecting the call. At least something appeared to be going right. Lee placed the phone on the table and held his head in his hands.

“You okay?” Vivian asked as she pulled out the chair next to his.
